Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball, Girls Varsity Volleyball · HS Volleyball: MSP-2019 All-Robertson County volleyball team: Ashleigh Shores earns Player of the Year

Dec 17, 2019

19 athletes have been named to The Connection’s 2019 All-Robertson County volleyball team.

East Robertson and White House Heritage led the way with five selections apiece. Heritage junior Ashleigh Shores earned Player of the Year, while Brandon Niblock was named Coach of the Year.

The Lady Indians, led by Connie Caldwell-Rogan, earned Team of the Year for their run to the Class A sectionals. East Robertson finished 11-9 overall and went undefeated in District 8-A.

Jo Byrns, Greenbrier and Springfield were also represented by at least two players each. White House players were named to the All-Sumner County team.

Nominations and statistics were sought from all five county volleyball coaches, and The Connection staff made final decisions on the awards. The full team is listed below:

Player of the Year: Ashleigh Shores, White House Heritage junior

Resume: .280 hitting percentage, 238 kills, 47 aces, All-District 11-AA, All-Region 6-AA

When the Lady Patriots needed a kill, they turned to Shores. The junior was a force on the outside, averaging four kills and five digs per game. The outside hitter also had a strong hitting percentage and 47 aces. She will return for what could be an even better senior campaign next year.

Coach of the Year: Brandon Niblock, White House Heritage

Resume: 16-20, Runner-up in District 11-AA, Region 6-AA appearance

Niblock tried a new coaching strategy this season: talking less. The move seemed to pay off. During the District 11-AA tournament, Niblock could be seen sitting on the bench during some timeouts, letting his players work through situations on their own. White House Heritage responded with a solid season despite the loss of 2018 Robertson County Player of the Year Lila Branlund. The Lady Patriots lose just two seniors, so an improved record could be coming in 2020.

Team of the Year: East Robertson Lady Indians

Resume: 11-9 (8-0 in District 8-A), advanced to Class A sectionals

First-year coach Connie Caldwell-Rogan provided stability for East Robertson, and the results showed. The Lady Indians went undefeated in District 8-A and won the district tournament before falling to Watertown in the Region 4-A Championship. East Robertson finished one win short of the Class A state tournament after losing to Sale Creek in the sectionals. This all came on the heels of a losing season and coaching turnover in 2018.
